When the heat rises in the medina, the Atlas Mountains offer cool air, dramatic scenery and a glimpse of Berber life, all within easy reach of Marrakech. Here is how to choose your destination, plan the day and get there in the best conditions.
Ourika Valley or Imlil: where to go?
The Ourika Valley
About an hour's drive from Marrakech, this is the classic escape and works well as a half-day trip. Riverside cafés, villages clinging to the slopes and, for the more energetic, a hike up to the seven waterfalls.
Imlil, at the foot of Toubkal
For bigger views, head to Imlil, the gateway to Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. The village is a popular starting point for short walks through the surrounding Berber hamlets, with the high mountains as a backdrop.
How to choose
You have half a day: the Ourika Valley, which is closer.
You want big mountain scenery: Imlil, as a full-day trip.
You are traveling with children: a short walk along the river rather than the full climb to the waterfalls.
A sample half-day in the Ourika Valley
Morning: leave Marrakech early, with about an hour on the road.
On arrival: a stroll along the river or the climb toward the waterfalls, depending on your fitness.
Midday: a Berber lunch by the water.
Afternoon: back in Marrakech in time to enjoy the end of the day in the city.
How to plan your day in the Atlas
Leave early to beat the heat and the crowds.
Wear proper shoes: the waterfall trails are rocky.
Pack a warm layer: it is cooler at altitude than in Marrakech.
Bring cash for tea, tips and local handicrafts.
Carry water and sun protection.

How to get to the Atlas from Marrakech
Group tour, rental car or private driver: the simplest option is often a vehicle with a local driver. You set the pace, stop for photos and skip the crowded group buses.
AirportGo can arrange excursions and private drivers as part of a tailor-made trip: just request a custom quote with your dates and the part of the Atlas you would like to visit.
If you only need a simple round trip, you can also book a private transfer to the Ourika Valley or Imlil, with the return at a time of your choice.
Finish with a Berber lunch
To make the most of the experience, set aside time for a traditional Berber lunch in a village or by the river: it is often one of the highlights of the day.
